It seems like every few weeks there is another news headline or horrific story about animal hoarding. Animal hoarding/collecting is a mental disease. Some people save, hoard or collect worthless items, clothes, magazines, papers or in some cases animals.
Some animal hoarders start out with the best of intentions thinking they are saving animals from harm but things get quickly out of control when these well meaning people take in more dogs, cats, birds etc. than they can adequately care for. The animals start to overrun the home due to the lack of spaying and neutering.
Most animal hoarding situations end up disasterous with the animals being neglected, sick, injured, starving and living in filthy conditions. The hoarders tend to get overwhelmed and can't even properly care for themselves. They can't afford to provide adequate food or veterinary care for the animals. Hoarders lack the mental ability to understand that they are doing more harm than good and fear if they seek help the animals will be removed and euthanized.
The majority of hoarding situations go unnoticed for long periods of time until neighbors complain about the smell or the community they are living in expose them. Some of these hoarders call themselves rescues or sanctuaries but they are anything but a legitimate rescue group, shelter or sanctuary. It is common to find dozens and dozens of unsocialized animals in deplorable, unsanitary conditions with some of the animals already dead or dieing.
These people are blind to the reality of what harm they are doing to themselves and the animals. Animal hoarding is a type of obsessive compulsive disorder that takes a hold of peoples lives and without seeking professional help it will ultimately destoy them and the animals in their care.
